New Japan Pro Wrestling’s 13th Wrestle Kingdom emanated from the Toky Dome January 4, and once again it did not disappoint. Below are the results of a night full of surprises, Title changes, and farewells

Will Ospreay defeated Kota Ibushi (c) with a viscous running elbow to win the NEVER Openweight Title

IWGP Jr TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

LIJ Capture the Championship from Roppongi 3K & Suzuki-Gun

REVPRO UNDISPUTED BRITISH HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

Zack Sabre Jr defeated Tomohiro Ishii (c) by Submission to win the Revolution PRO Undisputed British Heavyweight Title. Sabre Zr becomes the first Champion under REVPRO’s new Title Belt (shown above)

IWGP HEAVYWEIGHT TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Young Bucks, Nick & Matt Jackson (Elite) vs Sanada & Evil (LIJ) vs Guerrillas of Destiny Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa © (Firing Squad)

Sanada & Evil win the Tag Team Titles, after the match Matt Jackson took to social media to thank Japan for their historic run 

IWGP UNITED STATES HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

Clad in Jacksonville Jaguars colors, The American Nightmare Cody © defended his Title against Juice Robinson. In the end Robinson spiked Cody with 2 Pulp Friction drivers, definitively beating the departing Rhodes

IWGP Jr HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Kushida © enters to a thrilling ‘Back to the Future’ themed entrance, but in the end Taiji Ishimori defeated the Time Splitter to secure the Title for Bullet Club

 Switchblade Jay White (Bullet Club) defeated Okada (Chaos) via pinfall in a huge statement win in Wrestle Kingdom’s only Non-Title Grudge Match

IWGP INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH – NO DQ

Tetsuya Naito survives a scary DDT on the table to outlast Christ Jericho (c) to win back his Intercontinental Title in an absolutely brutal battle 

IWGP WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

In what may very well be the Cleaner’s final appearance in New Japan, Omega clashed with the immortal Tanahashi. In a classic that will be tough to top for Wrestle Kingdom’s to come, Hiroshi Tanahashi successfully completed his G1 journey by winning his 8th IWGP World Title. After the match New Japan’s new Champion thanked the crowd and vowed to defend his Title with all he has left in him.

Closing thoughts: Wrestle Kingdom has never disappointed, and the 13th installment was as fast paced, exciting, and emotional as we have come to be spoiled by in a big time New Japan show. It’s bittersweet to see The Elite say goodbye to start their AEW venture, but the future is bright within the king of sports. Big wins by young and emerging talent, while still showcasing the legends that got us here gives fans a complete experience while having something to look forward to in this ever changing landscape.
