Roman Reigns Relinquishes Universal Title, Fighting Leukemia

Roman Reigns took to the microphone to address the WWE Universe in Providence, RI last night to kick off RAW. Not to talk about his triple threat match up with Brock Lesnar and Braun Strowman at Crown Jewel, but his crowd shocking announcement that he’d be missing time to battle Leukemia instead.

The outpouring of support from the crowd, the WWE fans online, and his fellow superstars has been something to behold. Even with tweets coming from Ring of Honor Ambassador Cary Silkin, and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

WWE has also put out an official press release regarding the announcement:

”Tonight on Monday Night Raw, Roman Reigns (aka Joe Anoa’i) announced that he is relinquishing the WWE Universal Championship and taking a leave of absence from WWE as he once again fights leukemia, which had been in remission since late 2008. Reigns is taking his battle with leukemia public in an effort to raise awareness and funds for research in order to advance cures for the disease.”

Following RAW, WWE released this backstage video of the superstars greeting Roman backstage after his tear-jerking announcement.

While we have been critical of the Roman Reigns character in the past, we know that Joe Anoa’i is a human being, and when human beings are struggling, the easiest way for them to get through the hard times, is for others to band together in support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Roman and his family at this time, and we wish him a speedy recovery.
